In 1800, only few elements (about 30) were known but now 118 elements have been discovered. With such large number of elements it is very difficult to study individually the chemistry of all these elements. To ease out this problem, chemists searched for a systematic way to classify the elements.
After various attempts the chemists were successful in arranging the elements in such a way that the similar elements were grouped together and dissimilar elements were separated from one another. This arrangement of elements is called classification of elements.
What we are going to study
In this chapter we are going to study about modern periodic law and modern periodic table, IUPAC classification of elements, Nuclear charge and effective nuclear charge, periodic trend and periodicity (Periodic Properties of Elements).
When you have finished studying this unit, you should able to:
- state the modern periodic law and understand modern periodic table. classify and understand elements into different groups, periods and blocks understand IUPAC classification of elements.
- take idea about nuclear charge and effective nuclear charge.
- predict periodic trends and periodicity in atomic radii, ionic radii, ionization energy, electron affinity, and electronegativity.
- explain the general trends of metallic characters.
